PartialSuccess
From MRQWiki
This is a system I use for opposed rolls, whether in combat, spell resistance or hide and sneak.
Partial Successes. It is possible for a character to succeed at its test but still lose the contest if their opponent does better. In this case the character loses the contests but scores a “partial success.” A partial success is the equivalent of doing better than failing a test but not by much. For example, if a character tries to sneak past a guard (stealth vs perception) and makes its skill test but loses the contest, then it will still have scored a partial success. In this case the guard can see that there is someone around but can’t immediately identify the sneaking character, possibly allowing the character a chance to escape. As a rough guideline, a GM can determine that a partial success is about 1/2 as good as a normal success.
In an opposed roll there are therefore two winning scores (critical and normal success) and three losing scores (partial success, failure and fumble).
