Variants to Very High Skills and Opposed Tests

In Chapter 2 - Skills of the MRQ Main Rulebook, there are rules for Opposed Tests and Very High Skills (p. 21). These particular rules for Opposed Tests (halving both Skills for opposed tests involving one or more opponent(s) with a skill exceeding 100%) have been widely criticized by fans. Here are some of the possible house-rules to solve this problem.

  • Apply the Opposed Tests rules on p.20 normally and discard the Very High Skills and Opposed Tests rules (p.21). Points over 100% in a skill are be added to the result of the d100, while the die result, and only the die result, is used to indicate a success or failure to the test.
Example: Aalkhan the Half-Handed tries to sneak into the Castle of the Anhan'Ur Wind Giants.
Aalkhan has a Sneak skill of 95%. He makes an Opposed Test against one of the Wind Giants
standing guard near the main gates with a 110% in Perception. Both roll. Aalkhan rolls a 94
while the Giant rolls a 93. Both succeed their tests, but the Giant adds 10 to his die result
(110 - 100 = 10) for a total of 103, which beats the 94 and is still considered a success to
the test (since the GM only considers the Giant's die result, 93, to know if the test is
succeeded or failed). The Giant noticed Aalkhan!
  • Ignore any special rules for very high skills and high roll success; simply roll the dice and use margin of success for equal success levels. Crits trump regular successes, regardless of margin.
Example: Using the scenario above, both roll a 90. Both succeed, but the Giant wins the opposed
roll because (110-90=20) > (95-90=5). The Giant noticed Aalkhan!
Example: Using the scenario above, Aalkhan rolls a 9 (a crit) and the Giant rolls a 12. Aalkhan
wins the Opposed Test because he rolled a critical result even though (110-12=98) > (95-9=86).
The Giant does not notice Aalkhan!
